Former acclaimed electronic music producer Clarian has turned their focus to a new project, blending AI technology with analog synths to create existential synth pop. Their music explores burnout, anxiety, drug addictions, and the exploitation they faced in the music industry. With a critique of the streaming industry's impact on artistic integrity, each song is a short chapter from their life, paired with AI-generated animations that visually narrate the story. Clarian uses AI visuals to depict themself often as a cyber-trans goth girl with a coke-addicted bear roommate, navigating dead-end jobs, paying rent, and dreaming of synth pop stardom. In tracks like "YouTube Techno," they imagine working the night shift at a zombie-infested grocery store, while "Send Me Your Demos" features their mobster landlord, half-octopus, sending goons for being behind on rent. The project reflects the growing role of AI in music and video, questioning when technology becomes "true" art. Clarian blends their 20 years of studio experience with modern AI tools to create provocative results. Through characters like girls, animals, and aliens, they explore themes of identity and self-perception. Since then, Clarian, who has collaborated with numerous artists, completed a degree in computer science and co-founded startups that garnered over 40 million impressions worldwide. They’re now working on a reflective collection that combines their past musical work with their exploration of AI in art.
