Is Muscle Memory a band or a DJ/production duo? The answer is yes. Longtime veterans of the NYC indie community, Steven Reker and Michael Tapper connected during their parallel journeys from the world of rock bands and live performance into the dance music and DJ universe, ultimately deciding to blend the two in a single pursuit. Bonding over their shared love for the Italo Disco, Post Punk, and Chicago House records they were both spinning, they decided to try writing music that would fit into their DJ sets. Things instantly clicked and soon they were playing live as a synthpop duo, in addition to maintaining a monthly DJ residency at Nightmoves, the Brooklyn dance club opened by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. Reker has a history of blending artistic worlds, combining his background in contemporary dance with his musical abilities for his seminal indie band People Get Ready, as well as his dancing & choreography work for David Byrne, Fleet Foxes, and Khruangbin. Tapper made a career playing drums for bands like We Are Scientists, Yellow Ostrich, and Fool’s Gold before moving into synth and drum machine programming with his more electronic project Practice. With a string of 12” singles out featuring remixes by acclaimed artists like Justin Strauss, Midnight Magic, and Woolfy (DFA/Permanent Vacation), the duo have more in the pipeline this year, as they also continue their own remix work, live shows, and DJing at both clubs and their own roving party Infinite Beat (!).
